As a psychotherapist, I believe all people have the right to a happy fulfilling life and I believe that for transgender folx, this life should start with being able to live in and express your affirmed, true gender identity. Your rights are not allowed to be taken away and I will fight to preserve your right to live in your truth. I started this work over a decade ago with the hopes to break down professional barriers for transitioning because my good friends transitioned and I saw the months of therapy they were required to undergo just for a letter of support of hormones. I wanted to change the way the system worked. .
If you are exploring your gender identity or already have a firm grasp on who you are, I can help with your mental health. My clients come to me when they are first coming out to explore how to transition and come out to their family, bosses and friends. Clients also come to me when they are already living in their true selves. They may come to me because they were raised in a strict religion and now have religious trauma and are looking for a secular therapist like myself. People who are autistic come to my practice because I am knowledgeable and competent to work with people who have neurodiversity.
As a mental health therapist and member of the LGBTQ community myself, I affirm the transgender community and the LGBTQ community, and I help people overcome relationship stress, religious trauma, and anxiety, and improve their relationships. I am WPATH GEI SOC v7 Certified psychotherapist and receive specialized training in working with the transgender community. I write gender affirming surgery letters and if needed I will write hormone letters. I am a speaker at conferences throughout the nation and stay up to date with new research while working with transgender clients.
If you would prefer, I offer video distance counseling to anyone who lives in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Florida in the United States of America. My private practice, Katie Leikam, MBA, LCSW, is in the metro Atlanta area, located in downtown Decatur, GA. I am also a LISW-CP licensed in South Carolina and an LCSW in North Carolina.
I work with children and teenagers around ages 11 to 18 as well as adults. I offer individual, family therapy and relationship therapy. My practice has a gender neutral bathroom.
