Get the facts about colleges and universities for transgender people

Generally, colleges are smaller institutions for education in comparison to universities. They offer undergraduate/Bachelor’s degrees, associate degrees, or certificates. In the UK, they are usually an education centre that you only attend for around two years, between the age of 16 and 18.

Universities are larger education institutions compared to colleges and offer both undergraduate and graduate/postgraduate degree programmes. In the UK you will attend a university from the age of 18 and above.

Everyone has their own idea on the best way they’d like to approach coming out during college, so go with what feels best for you! It’s probably a good idea to find support groups or become involved in the LGBT community, but it’s definitely not necessary if it’s not possible, it could just be beneficial to have a support system to fall back on for advice and help.

Many trans people have spoken out about their easiest route of coming out as trans at college, and a lot have followed a similar suit of informing friends and tutors via email or text message just before a holiday break, and making any “presenting changes” during the break.

Having other people like yourself, or a group of allies can be fundamental in benefitting your mental health at college. There will be different ways to do this from college to college, but the best idea is to talk to a tutor who you know will support you, or ask a member of another group in your college how they got theirs started!

Trans awareness day aims to amplify the marginalised voices of trans and non-binary people on campus, celebrate all trans people, and raise awareness to the trans and non-binary lived experience, both past and present day.

Throughout the day, the student union and the LGBTQ+ Society will usually host events that aim to act as a safe space for trans and non-binary people to discuss their experiences as well as events that remember important trans activists.
